Indianapolis police stopped an armed carjacker who crashed a vehicle and then pointed a gun at officers when the car he had stolen stalled.
The incident happened March 29, and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police released security and body camera video from the call this week, WXIN-TV reports. Public safety camera footage captured the beginning of the incident as the suspect—identified as Michael Barnes—crashed into a truck stopped at a traffic light after he ran the light and was struck by another car.
Barnes can then be seen jumping out of his car and running toward a stopped vehicle. He alleged pointed a gun at the woman in the vehicle, and she grabbed her child from the backseat before fleeing.
A chase with Indianapolis police ensued, reaching over 60 mph and running through red lights.
While trying to reach the interstate, Barnes' car stalled on the on ramp. Police believe the car stopped because the woman still had the key fob to her keyless ignition car.
“I got my keys so he’s not going to get far,” the woman is heard saying in the body camera footage.
Once the car stopped, Barnes got out of the vehicle and pointed a gun at police. Two officers then began firing at Barnes, who was critically wounded in the exchange.
Barnes was taken to the hospital, where he was stabilized. He faces multiple charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
